Effects of Employee Illness

While nobody likes to be sick, workforce illness affects more than the individual. Recent studies have shown poor health costs the U.S. economy over half a trillion dollars per year.

"Unscheduled absenteeism cost roughly $3,600 per year for each hourly worker and $2,650 per year for salaried employees."

— The Bottom-Line Killer

"Each episode of illness translates into five to six days of symptoms and between a half day and five days of work missed."

— National Business Group on Health

Workforce Illnesses

According to National Business Group on Health, Feb 20, 2013 the flu costs businesses approximately $10.4 billion in direct costs for hospitalizations and outpatient visits for adults each year. (1) The flu is responsible for 200 million days of diminished productivity, 100 million days of bed disability and 75 million days of work absence. (2) Each episode of illness translates into five to six days of symptoms and between a half day and five days of work missed. While hospitalization costs are important contributors, lost productivity from missed work days and lost lives comprise the bulk of the economic burden of influenza. (3)

The common cold with its high prevalence rates generates even more productivity loss than the flu. Medical studies show that 67% of adults experience at least one cold-related sickness per year. Most of those people experience an average of 2.2 colds per year. (4). Current findings indicate that 64% of working adults experience colds, resulting in about 197 million cold episodes in employed adults annually. With an average of 1.09 lost workday equivalents per cold episode, there are an estimated 214 million lost workdays due to the cold each year in the United States. (5) Productivity impact is at least as substantial as absenteeism. It is estimated that the indirect cost of common cold to businesses is over $25 billion annually (6) and accounts for approximately 40% of time lost from work in the U.S. thus justifiably being called the most “common” human illness. (7)

Sickness and Immunity

The immune system’s main role is protecting the body against infection and the development of cancer. Improving the immune system is the most important step in maintaining resistance to disease and lowering susceptibility to colds, flus and cancer. Optimizing your immunity involves a wellness-promoting approach integrating exercise, diet, stress management, and precise use of nutritional supplements and herbal medicines.

Signs of a Weakened Immune System

  • More than two colds per year
  • Cold sores/fever blisters
  • Chronic infections
  • Frequent stuffy nose and/or itchy eyes
  • Skin rashes/itching
  • Persistent fatigue

Causes of Low Immune Function

Elevated stress levels, passive lifestyle, poor dietary habits and poor nutritional status have all been implicated in weakening the immune system. Nutritional deficiency is the most frequent cause of a depressed immune system according to an overwhelming number of clinical investigations.

Flu Vaccine Issues

The medical community almost universally recommends getting the flu vaccine every year. This advice is not without merit but unfortunately has a limited value for most people.

On February 26, 2015, updated interim influenza (flu) vaccine effectiveness (VE) estimates for the 2014-2015 season were presented to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The updated VE estimate against influenza A H3N3 viruses was 18%. The VE estimate against influenza B viruses this season was 45%. When VE against all influenza viruses was combined, the overall VE estimate was 19%. In practical terms, this means the flu vaccine reduced a person’s risk of having to seek medical care for flu illness by 19%.

Given, the limited effectiveness of a flu vaccine, it is important to understand that there is a major difference between naturally acquired immunity and vaccine-induced immunity. Obtaining natural immunity has far greater benefits, but seems to be overlooked by the majority of the medical profession. Vaccines usually do not impart long-term immunity because they don’t create the kind of memory that occurs when you go through the process of a natural immune response. Natural exposure does not necessarily lead to infection – it is possible to obtain natural immunity without actually getting sick, if your immune system is functioning well. In fact, vaccines do not strengthen the healthy functions of the immune system, but actually weaken them. The risks of getting complications from the flu vaccine is small, but can be severe in some cases. Devastating cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome stemming from the seasonal flu vaccine have been reported as resulting in total body paralysis and are hard to disregard.

In summary, the flu vaccine, despite being almost universally recommended, does not provide adequate protection from illness and is not a substitute for a robust and optimized immune system.

We aim to promote health and wellness through the use of our immune optimization pack. Decreasing stress levels and learning stress coping strategies, improving diet and regular exercise are obvious approaches. However, given our ever busier lifestyles and work or family obligations these approaches can sometimes be impractical to incorporate into our lives. As physicians we recognize that this generic advice is rarely, if ever, implemented with regularity by our patients. Most people are simply too busy with everyday job and family demands to significantly alter their daily routine.

The immune system faces so many viruses, bacteria and various environmental threats throughout the year that it is getting more and more difficult to point to one season as needing the most attention. Our easy-to-take immune optimization pack is designed to be taken throughout the year without guessing as to when exactly the dreaded “sickness season” will strike.
